The district celebrated recent student accomplishments during the board of education meeting on May 5.

This past March, students from across the district were invited to submit original artwork for publication in a coloring book sponsored by the Shay Legacy Foundation, a New York-based nonprofit dedicated to career awareness, workforce development and creative student engagement. Participants were challenged to design a coloring book page that promotes career exploration in transportation, supply chain, logistics and infrastructure, all centered on a New York State theme. Washington Street School sixth grader Sienna Sparacio was selected to have her artwork published. The district’s participation in this contest was organized by teacher Maggie Tittler.

Following the coloring book recognition, the district’s coding teacher Julia Caiazzo and STEAM teacher Matthew Dornemann presented an overview of this year’s new fifth grade Coding Club. This 10-week afterschool program introduced students to the fundamentals of computer programming using KidOYO, an engaging online learning platform. In April, eight students represented the district at the KidOYO Upper Elementary Division Code Conquest Hackathon, where they tied for seventh place out of 26 teams.
