Bond Vote to Address Critical Facilities Repairs

At its Aug. 6 meeting, the Franklin Square School District Board of Education approved a resolution to present a capital improvement bond proposition to voters. The proposed $37.95 million bond will address critical infrastructure, safety and facility needs across all three district buildings, as identified in a comprehensive planning process. A community vote has been scheduled for Oct. 21.

As part of the district’s ongoing commitment to safe, modern and efficient learning environments, a New York State Education Department-required Building Condition Survey was completed in 2023. Following the survey, a five-year facilities plan was developed through a detailed review of current and future district needs. This process included input and prioritization from district administration, the Bond Committee, and the district’s architects and engineers.

The proposed work falls into four key categories:

* Security enhancements such as upgrades to door access control systems.

* Site and accessibility improvements featuring repairs to exterior stairs, ramps and steps.

* Infrastructure repairs and upgrades including roof and window repairs and replacements, fire alarm system replacement, corridor ceiling and wall repairs and emergency lighting updates.

* HVAC and ventilation system updates to improve indoor air quality.

In addition to districtwide improvements, the proposal includes the replacement of the community artificial turf and upgrades to lighting on the large athletic field located at Washington Street School. The field is currently utilized by community-based organizations, as well as student-athletes at H. Frank Carey High School within the Sewanhaka Central High School District.

If approved by voters on Oct. 21, the project will be financed through the issuance of bonds and eligible for New York State Building Aid, which will help offset a significant portion of the cost to local taxpayers.

Further details, including project timelines and community information sessions, will be shared in the coming weeks.
